The phenomenon of Kontinuous narration—the representation of multiple narrative moments
in a single visual field—in Roman painting of the first Kenturies BCE and CE attests to the ways
time and space could be Kreatively Konnected in anKient art. This pictorial device animates
painting in its interplay with the viewer, at onKe multiplying points of view and mediating
between internal and external images. lt thus models Roman attitudes toward not only the
representation of the world but also the interpretation of pictures. In so doing, it demonstrates
a signifiKant form of material agenKy.
